ASMP Receives Distribution From Authors Coalition

Philadelphia, PA… The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has announced that the association has received $99,790 from the Authors Coalition of America (ACA), an organization which distributes money collected for copying non-title-specific works abroad, primarily in Scandinavia and Europe. Non-title-specific works are those that cannot be identified individually or by copyright owner.

Distributions are made periodically by ACA to ASMP and other visual arts organization members on the basis of an established formula, and funds are designated for use solely in industry education and advocacy. ASMP is the premier trade association for photographers who create images primarily for publication, and the association is a leader in providing professional photographers with business education and protecting their rights.

According to ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, "These funds allow us to continue to forge ahead on important ASMP initiatives in industry education and advocacy which impact the entire photographic community." ASMP General Counsel Victor S. Perlman added, "With the help of this funding, we plan to maintain our leadership role in advocating for the legal rights of all photographers." ASMP has utilized ACA funding for a number of initiatives including Registration ©ounts, which creates awareness of copyright issues and encourages photographers to register their work; Strictly Business 3, the next phase of the acclaimed photography business education series; the Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS) Registry, a resource to provide unique searchable identifiers and image recognition to determine an image creator's name, contact information and usage rights; and dpBestflow, the latest in digital imaging best practices offered by ASMP in conjunction with the Library of Congress through its National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program. Earlier this year, ASMP announced the development of educational tools for the industry which are available free of charge to all interested photographers at http://www.asmp.org/strictlybusiness/.

Founded in 1944, ASMP is the leader in promoting photographers' rights, providing education in better business practices, producing business publications for photographers, and helping to connect purchasers with professional photographers. ASMP has 39 chapters across the country and its more than 7,000 members include many of the world's foremost photographers.
